Before we had children I was definitely a ready meal or eat out person. When the girl came along I suddenly developed a desire to make all sorts of things from scratch. I’m not a fabulous cook but I like to think that I can feed my family food that is nutritious, tasty, and last, but not least, not actively poisonous. Over the years I’ve started becoming a bit more ambitious. We bought a breadmaker, I make yoghurt (from a dried culture, nothing too technical) and I started making and decorating the kid’s birthday cakes. Last year I was brave enough to make a fruit cake and this year I branched out to chocolate cake.
Then (and I’m sorry to bang on about this again) we discovered the boy’s nut allergy. Just in time for Christmas, which is possibly the nuttiest time of the year. It’s not just the cakes and the bowls of nuts that we’re likely to trip over, but also mince pies. I had no idea that mincemeat had nuts in it.
I made my own mincemeat this year and it was curiously satisfying. I wish I could somehow have made you smell my kitchen on Saturday – it was the very essence of Christmas.
All I have to do now is master pastry and we’re away.

Oh, that nut allergy is going to be tough for the holidays. But I’d love your fruit cake recipie.
Love the girl cooking, so proud!

How’d you make ‘mince meat’?

Yes, Christmas is not the best time for children to have allergies. You must be incredibly stressed about it? I know I would be. Hell, I am and I’m not dealing with a life threatening allergy!

Filo my dear, filo! Actually the frozen stuff out of the supermarkets is safe, I can’t for the life of me remember the brand but you know the one, blue for puff, red for shortcrust (or is it the other way round?). I too make my own mincemeat but I buy my puff pastry like my fondant icing – ready rolled
When I was young we used to have a huge tin of Quality Street under the tree for the duration of December. To carry this “traditional sugar-fest” on with my kids I bought a cake tin and I fill it up with safe sweets. M&S still do eclairs and some safe mints and toffees and Buchanans do a whole range of safe, shiny papered (and therefore Christmassy) sweets. This year I will mostly be buying tree decorations and chocolate Santas from Asda own brand range, they are the only safe one left (I suspect they source from Kinnerton tbh).
HTH!

Very courageous! I have many happy memories of my own mother making mincemeat. It’s not something that I would ever think of doing – you’re living testimony to the phrase ‘needs must’!

Oooh, well done you! Very Christmassy. Shortcrust is pretty easy, just don’t overhandle it. You can even use cold butter and just employ the food processor to do the bulk of the work. Though, loving the filo idea a lot!

I’m NEVER able to bake with my kids that I don’t snap a ton of photos just like the one above! The girl is SO adorable. Those cheeks!
I am so nowhere near your level of allergy fear, since I’m still able to eat the allergen and just deal with the itchies– but this year I, too, am looking for holiday recipe substitutes and will be testing new recipes for the next few weeks before the actual holidays. Good luck to you! It might turn out kind of fun to try new recipes… maybe?
